Project Overview

The Sundaragama Eco Resort website was designed and developed by Isura Wickramarachchi in 2007 as the official online presence for the resort located in Gampaha, Sri Lanka. Developed as a static HTML website, the project was introduced with a custom Flash introductory animation, providing visitors with a memorable visual experience before entering the main website.

The website was created to promote the resort's eco-friendly environment, accommodation, dining facilities, and natural surroundings while presenting Sundaragama as a peaceful destination for relaxation, family holidays, and nature lovers. Over the years, the resort has continued to grow into a well-known hospitality destination offering accommodation, dining, weddings, and banquet facilities.

Design & Structure

The website was built around the concept of bringing nature into the digital experience.

After the Flash introduction, visitors entered a homepage that immediately reflected the atmosphere of the resort through a combination of organic curves, vibrant colours, and nature-inspired imagery.

The most distinctive feature of the design is the flowing wave composition that appears both at the top and bottom of the page. Rather than using conventional straight headers and footers, smooth overlapping curves in orange, green, and black create the impression of rolling hills and natural landscapes, reinforcing the eco-resort identity.

A striking close-up image of a peacock feather stretches across the upper section of the homepage, adding colour, texture, and an unmistakable connection with Sri Lanka's wildlife. This was complemented by the flowing green landscape illustration across the footer, visually balancing the page and creating a seamless transition between content and decorative elements.

The homepage is divided into two primary areas:

  • A welcoming introduction describing the resort and its peaceful natural setting.
  • A visual showcase featuring facilities, gallery highlights, and location previews.

This image-based navigation encouraged visitors to explore the resort while maintaining a clean and uncluttered interface.

The design combines black, vibrant orange, green, and natural earth tones, creating a luxurious yet eco-friendly visual identity that distinguished the website from traditional hotel websites of the period.

Unique Design Concept

The Sundaragama Eco Resort website was designed around the philosophy that nature itself should become the primary design element.

Instead of relying on heavy textures or conventional hotel photography, the interface uses flowing organic shapes inspired by landscapes, leaves, and natural terrain. The curved graphics create movement throughout the page, making the website feel alive while maintaining excellent visual harmony.

The Flash introductory animation added an additional level of sophistication that was highly popular in premium hospitality websites during 2007. Rather than functioning as decoration alone, the introduction established the resort's identity before visitors entered the website, creating a memorable first impression.

Another innovative feature was the use of image-based content navigation. Instead of presenting visitors with long blocks of text, attractive photographs representing facilities, gallery, and location acted as visual entry points into the website, allowing users to explore the resort intuitively.

This combination of elegant illustration, photography, and carefully balanced layouts created a timeless design that remained visually distinctive while reflecting the peaceful atmosphere of the resort.

Significance

The Sundaragama Eco Resort project demonstrates Isura Wickramarachchi's ability to blend creative visual design with practical hospitality marketing. Rather than presenting the resort through conventional layouts, the website used artistic illustrations, flowing natural forms, and immersive imagery to communicate the experience of staying close to nature.

The custom Flash introduction, combined with the distinctive wave-based interface and vibrant wildlife-inspired graphics, made the website stand out among Sri Lankan hotel websites of its era. By transforming natural elements into integral parts of the interface rather than simple decorations, the project created a memorable online identity that reflected the resort's peaceful environment and eco-tourism philosophy.

The website remains an excellent example of early hospitality web design, showcasing how thoughtful artistic direction and carefully crafted interfaces could create a strong emotional connection with visitors while effectively promoting a growing Sri Lankan eco-resort.
