Mt. Wellingtom Buddhist Temple
Project Overview
The Mt Wellington Buddhist Temple website was designed and developed in 2006 by Isura Wickramarachchi as the official online presence of one of New Zealand's leading Buddhist temples. The website was created to provide both local and international visitors with a comprehensive introduction to the temple, Buddhist teachings, community activities, and cultural programs.
Designed as a static HTML website, the project served as an online information centre where visitors could explore Buddhism, access temple activities, learn about community services, and stay informed about upcoming religious events. The website also introduced donation opportunities, helping supporters contribute to the temple's charitable and educational work.
Design & Structure
The website embraces a calm, elegant, and spiritually inspired design, using warm earth tones and traditional Buddhist imagery to create an atmosphere of peace and reflection.
The header features an illustration of Lord Buddha beneath the Bodhi Tree, immediately establishing the spiritual identity of the website. Soft golden gradients and curved design elements flow across the banner, creating a tranquil visual experience that reflects Buddhist philosophy.
The homepage is organised into three clear sections:
- Main welcome and introductory content
- Inspirational "Buddha's Words" quotation panel
- News & Events section for temple announcements
This balanced layout allows visitors to quickly access information while maintaining a clean and uncluttered reading experience.
A secondary navigation menu provides direct access to the temple's key activities and educational resources, enabling visitors to explore the website intuitively.
Unique Design Concept
One of the most distinctive aspects of this project was its ability to communicate Buddhist serenity through visual design rather than relying on decorative effects.
Instead of creating a conventional corporate website, the interface was carefully designed to reflect the peaceful atmosphere of a Buddhist temple. Soft colours, flowing curves, generous white space, and traditional artwork work together to create an online environment that encourages calmness and contemplation.
The design avoids visual clutter, allowing visitors to focus on the teachings and information rather than graphical distractions. This minimalist philosophy was particularly effective during the mid-2000s, when many websites relied on heavy graphics, Flash animations, and busy layouts.
The integrated "Buddha's Words" panel provided visitors with inspirational quotations, while the News & Events section kept the community informed about religious ceremonies, educational programs, and temple activities. Together, these elements transformed the homepage into both an informational resource and a welcoming spiritual gateway.

Significance
The Mt Wellington Buddhist Temple website demonstrates Isura Wickramarachchi's ability to adapt his design approach to suit cultural, educational, and religious organisations. Rather than applying a generic corporate style, the project was carefully crafted to reflect the values of Buddhism through its colour palette, imagery, layout, and typography.
By combining elegant aesthetics with clear information architecture, the website successfully created an online environment that was both informative and spiritually welcoming. It enabled the temple to reach a wider international audience, promote Buddhist education, strengthen community engagement, and provide easy access to temple activities and resources.
More than two decades later, the project remains an excellent example of how thoughtful design can communicate cultural identity and spiritual values while maintaining professional usability and timeless visual appeal.
The Wellington Buddhist Centre is part of a world-wide Buddhist movement called the Friends of the Western Buddhist Order (FWBO).
The FWBO was founded in 1967 by Urgyen Sangharakshita, an Englishman who spent 20 years in India as a Buddhist monk. There he studied, practiced and had contact with the main schools of traditional Buddhism.
He returned to the West with a clear awareness that although the essence remains the same, Buddhism must always express itself anew in each age and culture; and so he established a new Buddhist movement, the FWBO.
The FWBO is not aligned to any one school of Buddhism but draws inspiration from all traditions.
