Panthera Lodge Website
ව්‍යාපෘතිය පිළිබඳව

Project Overview

The Panthera Lodge website was designed and developed by Isura Wickramarachchi in 2006 as the official website for a luxury eco-lodge located near Yala National Park, Sri Lanka. Built as a dynamic PHP/MySQL website, the project combined an elegant corporate presentation with a custom gallery management system that enabled the lodge to regularly update photographs of its accommodation, wildlife, and guest experiences.

The primary objective of the website was to promote Panthera Lodge as a premium eco-tourism destination for both local and international travellers while providing comprehensive information about accommodation, dining, safari experiences, and reservation details.

Design & Structure

The website was carefully designed to reflect the beauty and tranquillity of Sri Lanka's wildlife environment.

The homepage immediately immerses visitors in the atmosphere of the lodge through a natural colour palette inspired by forests and grasslands. Soft green gradients, flowing landscape illustrations, and wildlife photography create an inviting visual experience that reflects the surrounding environment of Yala National Park.

One of the most striking design elements is the large bird illustration perched across the lower section of the page, seamlessly blending into the rolling green landscape. Combined with carefully positioned wildlife photographs—including the leopard, peacock, and lodge architecture—the homepage creates the feeling of entering a nature reserve rather than browsing a conventional hotel website.

The left-hand navigation provides quick access to all essential visitor information, while the central content area introduces the lodge and its unique safari experience. A vertical gallery on the right showcases wildlife, accommodation, and the lodge itself, encouraging visitors to explore further.

The interface uses earthy green, white, olive, and natural brown tones, perfectly complementing the eco-tourism branding of the property.

Unique Design Concept

The Panthera Lodge website was designed around the concept of bringing nature into the web experience.

Rather than relying on traditional hotel imagery alone, the design integrates illustrated landscapes with real wildlife photography to create an immersive visual identity. The sweeping green hills across the bottom of the page, together with the oversized bird illustration extending across the layout, were highly distinctive design techniques for tourism websites in 2006.

The website successfully balanced artistic illustration with functional navigation, creating a memorable user experience while maintaining excellent readability and fast page loading.

Unlike many accommodation websites of the period, which focused primarily on rooms and facilities, Panthera Lodge promoted the complete wildlife experience, using its design to communicate the feeling of being surrounded by nature before visitors even arrived at the lodge.

The project also included a dynamic PHP/MySQL gallery management system, allowing staff to upload new wildlife photographs, accommodation images, and guest experiences through an administration panel. This ensured the website remained fresh and visually engaging without requiring manual updates to the HTML pages.

Significance

The Panthera Lodge project is an excellent example of Isura Wickramarachchi's ability to combine creative visual storytelling with practical web application development. While the dynamic gallery system provided the client with an efficient way to maintain fresh content, the design itself became one of the website's greatest strengths.

By blending illustrated natural landscapes with authentic wildlife photography, the website created a distinctive identity that captured the spirit of Sri Lanka's eco-tourism industry. The flowing landscape, oversized bird illustration, and carefully balanced earthy colour palette transformed a standard accommodation website into an immersive digital experience that reflected the serenity and biodiversity of Yala National Park.

The project remains a strong example of early eco-tourism web design, demonstrating how thoughtful visual design and dynamic content management could work together to create an engaging, memorable, and commercially effective online presence during the formative years of modern tourism websites.

Panthera Lodge is a unique experience for anyone who yearns to enjoy a holiday close to nature. Located in the Semi Arid Dry Zone of Sri Lanka bordering the small fishing village of Kirinda, Panthera Lodge has the character to rejuvenate your spent batteries. If you are a nature lover with a zest for wildlife, Panthera will provide you just that opportunity.

The lodge itself is built, based on an architecture that is typical of African Safari Game Lodges. Crisp linen and exquisite tastes of Sri Lanka are just the beginning of a wonderful experience at Panthera. The evenings start with sundowners while you enjoy the wonders of the milky-way in anticipation of a succulent barbeque prepared by the in-house chef cum caretaker “Liyanage”.

The afternoons are spent relaxing after a morning game drive tracking leopards and elephants at the Yala National Park, which is just twenty minutes away. The afternoons are warm but a soothing breeze speeds through the lodge cooling you.
