Splash Bug Juwellers
Project Overview
The Splash Bug website was designed and developed in 2005 by Isura Wickramarachchi in collaboration with Webb & Flow (USA) as an online catalogue and promotional website for a lifestyle brand offering handcrafted products inspired by tropical island culture. The website showcased collections including batik art, beach wraps, handcrafted jewellery, gemstones, glass beads, and lac bead accessories, allowing visitors to explore the brand's unique range of artisan products.
Developed as a static HTML website, the project functioned as an online showroom where customers could browse product categories, learn about the craftsmanship behind each collection, and contact the company for purchases and enquiries. At a time when small lifestyle brands rarely had visually distinctive websites, Splash Bug presented its products through an engaging and highly creative digital experience.
Design & Structure
The website features one of the most artistic and colourful interface designs created during the mid-2000s. Instead of following the traditional product catalogue format, the entire website was designed to reflect the vibrant atmosphere of tropical beaches, handcrafted art, and island living.
The homepage combines bold colours, playful illustrations, and textured backgrounds to create an energetic visual identity. A large illustrated banner featuring beach-themed artwork immediately establishes the brand personality, while brushstroke graphics and irregular shapes give the website the appearance of a hand-painted artwork rather than a conventional webpage.
The layout is carefully organised into multiple content areas. Product categories are displayed using integrated photographs, allowing visitors to immediately recognise the variety of handcrafted items available. Navigation is positioned across the top for quick access to each collection, while the centre of the homepage highlights featured products and introduces the brand.
Unlike many retail websites of 2005 that focused primarily on product listings, Splash Bug used visual storytelling to create an emotional connection with visitors before presenting the products themselves.

Significance
The Splash Bug project demonstrates how a lifestyle and handcrafted products brand could establish a memorable online identity through creative visual storytelling rather than conventional e-commerce design. Instead of presenting products within ordinary catalogue pages, the website used original illustrations, artistic textures, and vibrant colours to communicate the personality of the brand and the craftsmanship behind its collections.
The project reflects Isura Wickramarachchi's philosophy of creating completely original, handcrafted websites tailored to each client's unique identity. By transforming the website itself into a work of digital art, Splash Bug stood apart from many commercial websites of the mid-2000s. More than two decades later, the archived website remains an excellent example of early boutique retail web design, illustrating how originality, artistic direction, and thoughtful interface design could create a memorable and engaging online shopping experience.
