Project Overview

The SandBar Restaurant – Clairita's Tiki Bar website was designed and developed in 2005 by Isura Wickramarachchi in collaboration with Webb & Flow (USA) as a vibrant promotional website for a Caribbean-themed beachfront restaurant and tiki bar.

Built as a static HTML website, the project was designed to capture the relaxing atmosphere of island dining while providing visitors with essential information including restaurant menus, directions, catering services, news, and entertainment. The website also promoted the venue's live music events and tropical dining experience, encouraging both local customers and tourists to visit the restaurant.

Rather than functioning as a simple online brochure, the website was designed to recreate the feeling of arriving at a tropical beach restaurant through its immersive visual presentation.

Design & Structure

One of the most remarkable aspects of the project is its highly artistic tropical interface, which was very uncommon for restaurant websites in 2005. Instead of using traditional corporate layouts, the entire website was designed as if visitors were looking at a handcrafted Caribbean travel brochure.

The design makes extensive use of natural textures, giving every section the appearance of hand-painted wood, tropical paper, and island decorations. Irregular borders, rough-edged panels, and organic shapes replace the standard rectangular boxes commonly used during that period.

The homepage is divided into three visually balanced sections. A large tropical photograph and restaurant menus occupy the left side, the main content introduces the restaurant in the centre, while the restaurant logo and navigation are positioned on the right, creating a layout that feels both artistic and easy to navigate.

Large tropical photography, palm trees, beach scenery, and cocktail-themed illustrations reinforce the restaurant's identity and immediately immerse visitors in the Caribbean atmosphere.

Unique Design Concept

The website was created around the concept of bringing the restaurant's atmosphere onto the computer screen. Every visual element contributes to that experience.

Unique Design Features

  • 100% custom-designed interface with no commercial templates.
  • Creative handcrafted tropical theme, rarely seen in restaurant websites of the mid-2000s.
  • Organic page layout using irregular, natural-shaped content panels.
  • Custom textured backgrounds inspired by tropical wood and handmade paper.
  • Decorative tropical illustrations including palm trees, cocktails, and island artwork.
  • Beautiful integration of restaurant photography into the page structure.

  • Soft green, blue, and sandy earth-tone colour palette reflecting the Caribbean environment.
  • Balanced composition that combines photography, illustration, and typography.

Unlike many restaurant websites of the time that relied on simple text and photographs, this project transformed the entire interface into an extension of the restaurant's brand, creating a memorable online experience before visitors even arrived at the venue.

Significance

The SandBar Restaurant – Clairita's Tiki Bar project is an excellent example of experience-driven web design, where the website itself becomes part of the customer's journey. Instead of simply displaying information, the interface was carefully crafted to evoke the feeling of a tropical beach vacation through original artwork, textures, colours, and photography.

The project reflects Isura Wickramarachchi's philosophy of creating completely original, handcrafted websites that communicate the personality of each client rather than relying on generic templates. Its artistic layout, immersive tropical theme, and distinctive visual storytelling made it stand out among restaurant websites of the mid-2000s. More than two decades later, the archived website remains a fine example of early hospitality web design, demonstrating how creativity, branding, and user experience could be combined to create a memorable digital destination.
