Fobissea
Project Overview
The FOBISSEA website was designed and developed in 2006 by Isura Wickramarachchi in collaboration with JK Concept (Malaysia) as the official website of the Federation of British International Schools in South East Asia (FOBISSEA).
At the time of development, FOBISSEA represented one of the largest networks of British international schools in Asia, bringing together leading schools to promote educational excellence, professional collaboration, sporting competitions, leadership development, and student enrichment programmes. In 2013, the federation expanded beyond Southeast Asia and adopted its current name, FOBISIA (Federation of British International Schools in Asia).
Developed as a static HTML website, the project served as the federation's primary communication platform, providing information for member schools, principals, teachers, students, and parents across multiple countries. It showcased the federation's activities, member schools, educational programmes, annual events, and international collaborations.
Design & Structure
The website features a modern education-focused corporate design that combines professionalism with an energetic visual identity suitable for an international educational organisation.
The homepage is organised into multiple information zones that immediately communicate the federation's objectives. A large visual banner introduces the organisation, while supporting sections present the President's message, mission statement, educational philosophy, federation news, and featured programmes.
Unlike many educational websites of the period that relied on long textual introductions, FOBISSEA presents information through modular content panels, allowing visitors to quickly locate important information without navigating through large amounts of text.
The interface makes excellent use of blue, orange, yellow, and white, creating an energetic yet professional appearance. The design successfully balances corporate branding with the welcoming atmosphere expected from an educational organisation.
Unique Design Concept
One of the most innovative aspects of the project was its portal-style homepage, where multiple educational resources were presented simultaneously without overwhelming the visitor.
Rather than functioning as a simple information website, the homepage became an interactive gateway into the federation's activities, allowing users to access schools, events, news, sports competitions, educational resources, and member services directly from the main page.

Significance
The FOBISSEA project represents one of Isura Wickramarachchi's most prestigious international education website developments. Designing the official website for a federation representing leading British international schools across Asia demonstrated his ability to create professional digital platforms for large multinational organisations.
The website successfully reflected the federation's mission of promoting collaboration, educational excellence, professional development, and student enrichment across member schools. Its clean information architecture and modular presentation allowed a diverse audience—including school leaders, teachers, students, and parents—to easily access important resources and federation activities. FOBISSEA later evolved into FOBISIA, which today includes more than 100 member schools across 20 countries and continues to support high-quality British international education throughout Asia.
The project also reflects Isura Wickramarachchi's philosophy of creating purpose-built digital experiences tailored to each organisation's mission. Rather than producing a conventional institutional website, he designed a professional educational portal that balanced strong corporate branding with intuitive navigation and clear communication. More than two decades later, the project remains an excellent example of early international education web design and demonstrates how thoughtful interface design could effectively support collaboration across a large multinational educational community.
FOBISSEA is a federation of British international schools which promotes excellence, high achievement and good practice. It facilitates quality in-service training at reasonable cost to enhance the professional development of staff and provides opportunities for students, staff and parents of different cultures to come together for educational, sporting, artistic and cultural events, celebrating the diversity and the common bond of its member schools.
