ABOUT THE PROJECT

Project Overview

Musicians for the People was a dedicated event website designed and developed in 2005 by Isura Wickramarachchi to promote one of Sri Lanka's largest charity music events following the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami. Organized by The ONE Trust, the concert brought together an unprecedented number of Sri Lankan musicians from Sinhala, Tamil, and Western music traditions to perform on one stage in support of rebuilding educational facilities in tsunami-affected communities. The event was held on 1–2 April 2005 at the Racecourse Grounds, Colombo, with proceeds directed towards restoring schools and educational infrastructure.

The website served as the official online information portal for the event, providing details about the organizing committee, participating artistes and bands, sponsors, concert schedules, and contact information. It played an important role in promoting the concert while encouraging public participation and corporate support during a critical period of national recovery.

Design & Structure

The website featured a modern and emotionally engaging design that reflected both the humanitarian purpose of the event and the unity of Sri Lanka's music community.

The homepage combined vibrant colours with powerful imagery of smiling children affected by the tsunami, immediately communicating the charitable mission behind the concert. A clean blue and orange colour palette symbolized hope, optimism, and energy, while the musical note branding reinforced the event's entertainment focus.

Unlike many event websites of the period, the interface was entirely custom designed, with every graphic element created specifically for the project rather than using commercial templates.

The design featured:

  • Fully custom-built interface with an original visual identity.
  • Large promotional banner emphasizing the charity concert.
  • Emotionally impactful photography supporting the humanitarian message.
  • Simple horizontal navigation for quick access to event information.
  • Dedicated sections for committee members, artistes, bands, sponsors, and concert details.
  • Strong typography with carefully balanced page composition.
  • Consistent branding maintained throughout the website.
  • Fast-loading pages optimized for internet connections available in 2005.

The homepage effectively balanced promotional content with the event's charitable purpose, ensuring visitors immediately understood both the scale of the concert and the cause it supported.

Technical Highlights

  • Static HTML website.
  • 100% handcrafted interface with original graphics.
  • Cross-browser compatible for the leading web browsers of 2005.
  • Dedicated pages for performers, sponsors, committee members, and event information.
  • Optimized for quick loading and easy navigation.
  • Designed to support a large public awareness campaign during the post-tsunami recovery period.

Significance

The Musicians for the People website was more than an event promotion platform—it became a digital representation of one of Sri Lanka's earliest large-scale charity music initiatives following the tsunami. By bringing together artists from different musical traditions and providing a centralized source of information, the website helped communicate the event's message of unity, compassion, and national recovery. The concert itself was created to raise funds for rebuilding educational facilities in tsunami-affected areas, making the website an important communication tool for both participants and supporters.

The project reflects Isura Wickramarachchi's design philosophy of creating unique, purpose-driven websites that combined compelling visual storytelling with clear information architecture. Through its original design, meaningful imagery, and well-organized structure, the website successfully promoted a landmark charitable event while demonstrating how web design could contribute to humanitarian and social initiatives during a pivotal moment in Sri Lanka's history.
