My Campus Trade
Project Overview
CampusTrade was designed and developed as a dynamic online marketplace for university students to buy and sell used items within their campus community. The objective of the project was to provide a simple, secure, and user-friendly platform where registered members could advertise products, search listings, and connect with buyers and sellers.
The system was developed using Classic ASP with a database-driven architecture, allowing content to be updated dynamically while providing a scalable platform for managing users, advertisements, and product categories.
Website Features
The portal included a comprehensive set of marketplace features, including:
- Member registration and secure login
- Product posting and advertisement management
- Category and subcategory browsing
- Advanced keyword search
- University-based filtering
- Latest advertisements listing
- Product pricing and details
- Advertisement sidebar for featured promotions
- Contact and enquiry functionality
- Pagination for large product listings
Design Concept
The interface was designed with usability as the primary objective. A structured three-column layout allowed users to quickly browse categories, search for products, and view the latest listings. Colour-coded navigation, clearly defined content sections, and straightforward page layouts provided an intuitive user experience suitable for users with varying levels of technical knowledge.
The design was optimized for the standard monitor resolutions and web browsers commonly used during the mid-2000s.
Development Approach
The application was built using Classic ASP and a relational database to manage users, product listings, and search functionality. Dynamic content generation enabled new advertisements to appear instantly after submission, while search and filtering tools helped users locate products efficiently.
The system incorporated:
- Database-driven content management
- Session-based user authentication
- Dynamic product listing generation
- Search by category, university, and keywords
- Administrative content management
- Reusable ASP components for consistent page generation
Designer & Developer Perspective
CampusTrade demonstrates my experience in developing complete database-driven web applications during the early growth of e-commerce and online marketplace platforms. The project required the integration of front-end interface design with back-end ASP programming, database management, user authentication, and search functionality to create a fully interactive web application.
This project highlights my ability to design and develop scalable web systems using Classic ASP well before modern PHP frameworks and content management systems became mainstream.
