Sinhala Cinema Database Website
Project Overview
Films.lk was conceived, designed, and owned by Isura Wickramarachchi as Sri Lanka's first and only website dedicated exclusively to Sinhala cinema. Launched in 2009, the primary objective of the project was to build the country's most comprehensive digital archive covering every aspect of Sinhala cinema, preserving its history while making it freely accessible to audiences worldwide.
Following the development of the platform, an enormous amount of time was dedicated to collecting, verifying, and entering data. The initial release featured over 5,000 artists, more than 1,000 Sinhala films, and over 2,500 photographs, making it the largest online Sinhala cinema database available at the time.
The PHP/MySQL backend development was led by Yasitha Dinushi Munasinghe, a Bachelor of Information Technology (BIT) graduate of the University of Colombo, while the concept, system architecture, user interface design, database planning, content collection, and overall project direction were undertaken by Isura Wickramarachchi.

Achievements
In 2009, Films.lk received national recognition by winning the Best Entertainment Website in Sri Lanka at the first-ever Best Web Competition organised by the LK Domain Registry.
This prestigious award recognised the website's innovation, comprehensive content, technical implementation, and its outstanding contribution to preserving and promoting Sinhala cinema through digital technology.
Significance
Films.lk stands as one of Isura Wickramarachchi's most significant digital heritage projects. It transformed decades of Sinhala cinema history into a searchable online knowledge base at a time when no comparable platform existed.
Beyond being an entertainment website, Films.lk became an important digital archive that preserved thousands of records relating to films, actors, actresses, directors, musicians, producers, cinema halls, award ceremonies, songs, trailers, and historical photographs. The project demonstrated advanced PHP/MySQL database engineering, large-scale content management, and digital preservation techniques, establishing a new benchmark for entertainment and cultural websites in Sri Lanka while earning national recognition as the country's Best Entertainment Website in 2009.
Isura Wickramarachchi is a Sri Lankan author, historical researcher, web technology innovator, and social entrepreneur. He is best known as the creator of "Mahawansa Pradeepikawa", a comprehensive historical publication that presents the genealogy, portraits, and history of nearly 200 Sri Lankan monarchs in a modern, visually engaging format. The project combines historical research with digital technology, featuring QR codes that connect readers to an online knowledge platform containing expanded historical content, videos, and interactive resources.
Beginning his career in the fields of tourism and information technology, Wickramarachchi later founded isandi CREATIONS, one of Sri Lanka's pioneering web development companies. Over the past two decades, he has designed and developed hundreds of websites for clients in Sri Lanka and overseas. His award-winning projects include films.lk, Sri Lanka's first dedicated Sinhala cinema website, and mahawansaya.com, a digital platform preserving and promoting Sri Lankan history.
Driven by a passion for making history accessible to younger generations, Wickramarachchi spent approximately ten years researching more than 300 historical sources to produce Mahawansa Pradeepikawa. The 650-page, full-colour publication contains over 200 reconstructed royal portraits, more than 180 family trees, and detailed references designed to help readers understand the evolution of Sri Lanka's royal lineage. The work integrates traditional scholarship with modern visual learning techniques to encourage children and young adults to appreciate the nation's heritage.
Beyond his work as an author and technology professional, Wickramarachchi has actively contributed to numerous community development initiatives, including educational support programs, projects for children with special needs, blood donation campaigns, school infrastructure improvements, and digital literacy initiatives. His work reflects a commitment to using technology, education, and historical knowledge as tools for national development.
Through his publications, digital platforms, and public initiatives, Isura Wickramarachchi continues to promote Sri Lanka's history and cultural heritage while demonstrating how technology can preserve historical knowledge for future generations.
