Rumassala Beach & Environmental Clean-up Project
THE STORY

Date: 25 February 2018
Location: Rumassala, Galle, Sri Lanka
Organised by: HJM – Hadawathin Janadhipathi Mahinda Team

On 25 February 2018, the HJM team organised an environmental service project to clean Rumassala Beach and its surrounding natural environment in Galle. The initiative was intended to go beyond our political and social activities by making a practical contribution towards protecting Sri Lanka’s environment and public spaces.

Team members and other participants worked together in the coastal area while environmental awareness boards were also placed at selected locations. Messages such as “Protect our earth today, for our children’s tomorrow” and “When we heal the earth, we heal ourselves” highlighted the responsibility we have to preserve the environment for future generations.

The programme was attended by Rohitha Rajapaksa (Chichi), Premnath C. Dolawatte, Habaraduwa Chairman Dilshan Widanagamage, Ariyawansha Shammu and Sampath Athukorala, together with HJM members, friends from Galle and other supporters.

This project remains an important memory from my community-service activities because it represented a simple principle we tried to put into practice: protecting the environment requires action, not merely advice. It was an opportunity to work together, contribute our own labour and encourage greater responsibility towards the natural environment.
