ABOUT THE PROJECT

Project Overview

The Alliance Lanka website was designed and developed by Isura Wickramarachchi in 2007 as the official website of Alliance Lanka, a non-profit organisation working in the fields of HIV/AIDS awareness, prevention, counselling, community development, gender equality, and public health across Sri Lanka. The organisation has operated nationally since the 1990s and has partnered with government agencies, international donors, and civil society organisations on HIV/AIDS prevention and community-based development programmes.

Developed as a static HTML website, the project aimed to strengthen the organisation's online presence by communicating its mission, highlighting ongoing programmes, publishing organisational achievements, and providing an accessible platform for public awareness and donor engagement.

Design & Structure

The website was designed using a clean healthcare-inspired interface that reflects professionalism, compassion, and hope.

The homepage is built around a strong visual identity using shades of green and white, colours traditionally associated with health, healing, and growth. A panoramic banner featuring natural green grass creates a fresh and optimistic atmosphere, while the organisation's logo is prominently displayed to reinforce its identity.

The homepage is divided into three main information areas:

  • Welcome to Alliance Lanka, introducing the organisation's vision and objectives.
  • Our Mission, accompanied by HIV/AIDS awareness imagery and educational messaging.
  • Special Events, highlighting recent activities, awareness programmes, memorial events, and community outreach initiatives.

The use of carefully selected photographs, awareness symbols such as the Red Ribbon, and clean typography creates a balance between professionalism and empathy, making the website informative while remaining approachable for a broad audience.

A curved green graphic flowing across the lower section of the content area adds movement to the page while reinforcing the health and environmental themes of the organisation.

Unique Design Concept

The Alliance Lanka website was designed to communicate hope, awareness, and community support rather than focusing on illness.

Instead of using a conventional NGO layout filled with large amounts of text, the design combines positive imagery, soft colours, and structured content to encourage visitors to learn about HIV/AIDS prevention in a welcoming environment.

One of the most distinctive design elements is the combination of green natural imagery with healthcare symbolism. The fresh grass banner represents life, growth, and renewal, while the Red Ribbon immediately identifies the organisation's commitment to HIV/AIDS awareness without overwhelming the visitor with clinical imagery.

The homepage also separates organisational information from community activities through dedicated "Special Events" and "Mission" sections, allowing visitors to quickly understand both the organisation's purpose and its ongoing work.

The overall interface was intentionally kept clean and lightweight, ensuring fast loading and easy accessibility even on the slower internet connections common in Sri Lanka during 2007.

Significance

The Alliance Lanka project demonstrates Isura Wickramarachchi's ability to create meaningful websites for the non-profit and public health sector by combining professional design with effective communication. Rather than producing a conventional organisational website, the project established a visual identity that reflected the organisation's mission of promoting health, dignity, inclusion, and community empowerment.

The use of calming colours, positive imagery, and intuitive navigation created an inviting experience for visitors seeking information about HIV/AIDS awareness programmes and community development initiatives. By presenting the organisation's mission, achievements, and ongoing activities in a clear and engaging format, the website helped strengthen Alliance Lanka's public profile and support its outreach efforts.

The project remains a strong example of early NGO web design in Sri Lanka, illustrating how thoughtful interface design could effectively communicate complex public health messages while encouraging education, awareness, and community participation.
