Punsanda Aquarium website
Project Overview
The Punsanda Aquarium website was designed and developed by Isura Wickramarachchi in 2007 as the official online presence for a tropical ornamental fish business in Sri Lanka. Built as a static HTML website with a Flash animated header, the project was created to promote the company's ornamental fish collection, showcase available species, and introduce the business to both local and international aquarium enthusiasts.
The website combined vibrant aquatic photography with a clean information layout, allowing visitors to explore the company's products while experiencing an interface that reflected the colourful underwater world of ornamental fish.
Design & Structure
The website was designed around the visual experience of entering an aquarium.
The most striking feature is the large Flash animated aquarium banner spanning the entire width of the page. Filled with tropical fish, aquatic plants, and underwater scenery, the animation immediately captures visitors' attention and creates the impression of looking through the glass of a real aquarium.
The homepage is divided into several well-organized sections:
- Welcome to Punsanda Aquarium
- Latest Added Fish
- Pet Fish of the Month
- Featured Fish Gallery
Circular image frames on the right-hand side showcase different ornamental fish species, adding visual balance while reinforcing the aquatic theme. A dedicated "Latest Added List" introduces newly available fish, allowing customers to stay informed about the company's newest arrivals.
The colour palette combines black, vibrant green, orange, yellow, and blue, creating strong visual contrast that makes the colourful fish photography stand out while maintaining the atmosphere of an illuminated aquarium.
Unique Design Concept
The primary design concept behind Punsanda Aquarium was to recreate the experience of viewing a live aquarium through a web browser.
Rather than using a conventional corporate banner, the website opens with a full-width Flash animation of a living aquarium, where colourful tropical fish swim among aquatic plants. During the mid-2000s, Flash technology was widely used to create immersive experiences, and this project used it effectively to establish the website's identity within seconds.
The remaining interface was carefully designed to complement the animated header. Dark backgrounds imitate the appearance of an aquarium tank, allowing the vivid colours of the fish photography to become the focal point of every page. Circular image frames further reinforce the underwater theme while giving the homepage a distinctive and memorable appearance.
The project successfully combined attractive visual presentation with clear navigation, making it easy for visitors to browse information while enjoying the rich graphical experience.

Significance
The Punsanda Aquarium project showcases Isura Wickramarachchi's ability to create highly themed websites where the visual design becomes an extension of the client's business identity. Rather than relying solely on text and navigation, the project immersed visitors in the colourful world of ornamental fish through a carefully crafted combination of Flash animation, photography, and custom interface design.
The animated aquarium banner served as the centrepiece of the website, while the supporting layout maintained excellent usability and readability. This balance between creativity and functionality made the website both visually memorable and commercially effective.
Today, the project remains an excellent example of early multimedia web design, demonstrating how Flash technology and custom interface development could be combined to create engaging online experiences during the golden era of rich interactive websites in the mid-2000s.
