ABOUT THE PROJECT

Project Overview

The Ascella Vega website was designed and developed by Isura Wickramarachchi in 2003 in collaboration with Webb & Flow (USA) as the official online presence for the North Carolina rock band Ascella Vega. The band was part of the Raleigh music scene during the mid-2000s and continued performing in the region in subsequent years.

Developed as a fully Adobe Flash website, the project showcased the band's music, biography, live performances, photographs, and contact information through an immersive multimedia experience. At a time when broadband internet was becoming increasingly common, Flash technology enabled designers to create highly interactive websites that closely reflected the energy of music and entertainment.

Rather than functioning as a traditional website, the project was designed as an interactive digital stage, allowing visitors to experience the band's personality and style from the moment the site loaded.

Design & Structure

The website features a cinematic visual style that combines photography, animation, and layered graphics into a seamless full-screen presentation. Unlike many band websites of the early 2000s that simply displayed text and images, Ascella Vega created a dramatic atmosphere using animated transitions, moving interface elements, and carefully composed photographic backgrounds.

The homepage places the band members at the centre of the composition, using large professional promotional photography against a scenic landscape backdrop. This immediately establishes the band's identity while creating a memorable visual impact.

Navigation is integrated into the artwork itself. Instead of standard menus, visitors interact with animated buttons positioned naturally within the design, allowing the interface to feel like part of the overall artwork rather than a separate navigation system.

A dark ornamental border surrounding the page reinforces the band's rock identity while giving the entire website a polished, concert-poster appearance.

Unique Flash Design Concept

The defining feature of the project was its complete Flash-based multimedia experience. During 2003, fully animated Flash websites represented the cutting edge of web design, especially within the music industry.

  • 100% Adobe Flash website with custom animation throughout.
  • Completely original interface with no templates.

Significance

The Ascella Vega project represents one of Isura Wickramarachchi's early multimedia website developments and demonstrates his ability to combine graphic design, animation, and user interaction into a unified digital experience. At a time when Flash was the dominant technology for creative websites, the project showcased techniques that were considered highly advanced, including animated navigation, layered compositions, and full-screen interactive presentations.

Rather than creating a conventional promotional website, the project transformed the band's online presence into an extension of its artistic identity. The website communicated the band's energy, personality, and visual style through motion, imagery, and interactive design, making it memorable for visitors and helping to strengthen the band's brand.

The project also reflects Isura Wickramarachchi's philosophy of designing fully customized digital experiences tailored to each client. More than two decades later, the archived Ascella Vega website remains an excellent example of the creative possibilities of the Flash era and illustrates how animation, music, and visual storytelling could be combined to create an engaging online experience long before modern HTML5 technologies became available.

ABOUT THE CLIENT

The North Carolina based band Ascella Vega consists of Adam Newson (vocals/keyboards), Gray Henderson (guitar/vocals), Reaves Greer (drums/percussion), Mark Voller (bass), and Ryan Wooten (guitar/vocals). After forming in 2005, Ascella Vega began making rough recordings in both Raleigh, NC and Nashville, TN to send to venues around North Carolina. After playing numerous shows, various college parties and winning a few local battle of the bands, they decided it was time to make their first CD. In the fall of 2007, with hopes as high as the stars Ascella and Vega, the band began recording in Morrisville, NC and released their debut EP, "Put It In Motion" on March 26, 2008.
