CR & FC Sports Club
Project Overview
The CR & FC official website was designed and developed in 2004 as a complete digital platform for one of Sri Lanka’s oldest and most respected sporting clubs. The objective of the project was to create an online presence that represented the club’s rich rugby heritage while providing members, players, and supporters with regularly updated information about club activities.
The website was developed as a dynamic ASP-based application, allowing club administrators to manage and publish content such as news updates, match information, team details, events, newsletters, and photo galleries.
Design Concept
The design concept was inspired by the energy, tradition, and competitive spirit of rugby. The visual style combined strong sporting imagery, bold layouts, and the club’s identity elements to create an engaging experience for rugby fans.
During this period, web design was transitioning from static HTML pages to dynamic database-driven websites. The project incorporated early 2000s web technologies such as ASP programming, JavaScript effects, CSS styling, image-based navigation, and multimedia elements to deliver an interactive user experience.
Development Approach
The website architecture was created with a focus on easy content management and scalability. Key features included:
- Dynamic news management system
- Match and game-day information
- Team and player profiles
- Club history section
- Rugby calendar and events
- Photo gallery
- Newsletter section
- Member communication features
The development approach focused on creating a reliable and maintainable website that could support the club’s ongoing communication with its rugby community.
Designer & Developer Perspective
This project represents my early experience in developing professional sports organization websites using ASP technology. At the time, database-driven websites with administrative content management capabilities were considered advanced web solutions.
The CR & FC website project demonstrated the ability to combine creative web design with programming skills to deliver a complete digital solution for a major sporting institution.
The Ceylonese Rugby & Football Club (CR & FC) had its first roots in NCC and in its 1st four years depended on NCC and Havelock Sports club for their practices and matches. It was then that Colonel E. H. Joseph formed the Club in 1922 as the 1st Sri Lankan only rugby playing institution. Colonel Joseph insisted that the Club colors should be the same as the regiment he commanded, and the General Committee at that time agreed that the artillery colors of Red & Blue be the Club colors.
The 1st AGM was held n 1923 with some prominent names in Sri Lankan society taking active participation in the committee. They were the Schokmans, Rockwoods, Saravanamutthu, Weinman, and Ondatjie to name a few. The 1st captain was Dr. L.O. Weinman, while the vice-captain was Rajah Hewavitharana.
The Clifford Cup was re-introduced after the 1st world war, and CR & FC lost to the burly men of the combined service team by 3-6. CR rugby continued to flourish in the next decades to come and schoolboys from Trinity, Royal, Zahira, St. Peters, St. Thomas, and subsequently, Issipathana have represented the club with great distinction. The new clubhouse was opened in December 1964 and the main gate was opened in 1965.
