Mahawansaya - Redesigned- 2016
Project Overview
Mahawansaya.com was created by Isura Wickramarachchi in 2008 with a vision of preserving and presenting the history of Sri Lanka in a structured digital format. At a time when reliable historical information was scattered across books, libraries, and printed publications, the website introduced a central online platform where visitors could explore more than two millennia of Sri Lankan history through organised, searchable content.
The 2016 redesign represented a significant milestone in the project's evolution. The website adopted a completely refreshed visual identity while substantially expanding its historical database. The redesigned platform organised information chronologically and geographically, enabling users to explore ancient kingdoms, dynasties, colonial administrations, rulers, and historical events through a clear and intuitive navigation structure.
Developed using PHP/MySQL, the website enabled continuous expansion of historical records, allowing new articles, biographies, and research materials to be published efficiently while preserving a consistent user experience.

Significance
Mahawansaya.com represents one of Isura Wickramarachchi's most significant long-term digital heritage initiatives. First launched in 2008 and extensively redesigned in 2016, the project reflects his dedication to preserving, organising, and sharing the history of Sri Lanka through modern technology.
Rather than functioning as a conventional history website, the platform was developed as a structured digital knowledge base covering more than 2,500 years of Sri Lankan history. It brings together information on ancient kingdoms, dynasties, rulers, colonial administrations, historical events, and cultural heritage into a single, easily accessible online resource. The chronological organisation enables users to understand the continuity of Sri Lanka's civilisation from its earliest settlements through the Portuguese, Dutch, and British colonial periods.
The website has become a valuable educational resource for students, teachers, researchers, writers, and history enthusiasts by making historical information available in both Sinhala and English, thereby reaching local and international audiences alike. Its comprehensive structure supports historical research while encouraging a deeper appreciation of Sri Lanka's rich cultural legacy.
The 2016 redesign marked a new chapter in the platform's development, introducing a more immersive visual identity and an improved user experience while expanding the historical database. This transformation laid the foundation for the project's continued evolution, which would ultimately inspire the creation of the "Mahawansa Pradeepikawa"—a landmark historical publication by Isura Wickramarachchi that further advanced his lifelong mission of preserving and presenting Sri Lankan history for future generations.
The project gained national recognition when Mahawansaya.com was selected among the Top 20 Most Popular Websites in Sri Lanka at the 2010 LK Domain Registry Best Web Competition. This prestigious recognition highlighted the website's contribution to digital education, historical research, and the preservation of Sri Lanka's cultural heritage, demonstrating its growing influence as one of the country's leading online historical resources. The achievement further strengthened the platform's reputation as an innovative initiative that successfully combined technology with education to make Sri Lankan history more accessible to a wider audience.
