ABOUT THE PROJECT

Project Overview

Mahawansaya.lk was conceived, designed, and developed by Isura Wickramarachchi in 2010 as a community service initiative dedicated to preserving and promoting the history of Sri Lanka through digital technology. The website was created to provide free public access to historical information that was previously scattered across books, research papers, and other publications.

The portal brought together detailed information about Sri Lankan kings, historical events, religious developments, cultural heritage, archaeological sites, inscriptions, monuments, and significant national milestones, making it easier for students, researchers, teachers, and the general public to explore Sri Lanka's rich historical legacy through a single online platform.

Achievements

In 2010, Mahawansaya.lk received national recognition by being selected among Sri Lanka's Top 20 Most Popular Websites at the Second Best Web Competition organised by the LK Domain Registry.

This recognition acknowledged the website's contribution to digital education, cultural preservation, and the promotion of Sri Lankan history through innovative web technology.

In 2015, the project transitioned from the www.mahawansaya.lk domain to www.mahawansaya.com, where it continues to operate as an expanded and continuously updated historical knowledge platform.

Significance

Mahawansaya.lk represents one of Isura Wickramarachchi's most significant digital heritage and public service initiatives. Developed as a free educational resource, the website made Sri Lankan history more accessible by bringing together information on kings, kingdoms, religion, archaeology, cultural heritage, inscriptions, monuments, and historical events into a single searchable platform.

The project was recognised nationally when it was selected among the Top 20 Most Popular Websites in Sri Lanka at the 2010 LK Domain Registry Best Web Competition, highlighting its impact on digital education and cultural preservation.

More importantly, the years of research, data collection, content organisation, and historical analysis carried out while developing Mahawansaya.lk became the foundation for Isura Wickramarachchi's landmark publication, Mahawansa Pradeepikawa. The practical experience gained through building and maintaining the website inspired the creation of the book, allowing years of digital historical research to evolve into a comprehensive printed reference work.

Although the original mahawansaya.lk domain was retired in 2015, the project continues under www.mahawansaya.com, where it has grown into Sri Lanka's leading digital platform dedicated to the country's history, serving researchers, educators, students, and history enthusiasts around the world.

ABOUT THE CLIENT

Isura Wickramarachchi is a Sri Lankan author, historical researcher, web technology innovator, and social entrepreneur. He is best known as the creator of "Mahawansa Pradeepikawa", a comprehensive historical publication that presents the genealogy, portraits, and history of nearly 200 Sri Lankan monarchs in a modern, visually engaging format. The project combines historical research with digital technology, featuring QR codes that connect readers to an online knowledge platform containing expanded historical content, videos, and interactive resources.

Beginning his career in the fields of tourism and information technology, Wickramarachchi later founded isandi CREATIONS, one of Sri Lanka's pioneering web development companies. Over the past two decades, he has designed and developed hundreds of websites for clients in Sri Lanka and overseas. His award-winning projects include films.lk, Sri Lanka's first dedicated Sinhala cinema website, and mahawansaya.com, a digital platform preserving and promoting Sri Lankan history.

Driven by a passion for making history accessible to younger generations, Wickramarachchi spent approximately ten years researching more than 300 historical sources to produce Mahawansa Pradeepikawa. The 650-page, full-colour publication contains over 200 reconstructed royal portraits, more than 180 family trees, and detailed references designed to help readers understand the evolution of Sri Lanka's royal lineage. The work integrates traditional scholarship with modern visual learning techniques to encourage children and young adults to appreciate the nation's heritage.

Beyond his work as an author and technology professional, Wickramarachchi has actively contributed to numerous community development initiatives, including educational support programs, projects for children with special needs, blood donation campaigns, school infrastructure improvements, and digital literacy initiatives. His work reflects a commitment to using technology, education, and historical knowledge as tools for national development.

Through his publications, digital platforms, and public initiatives, Isura Wickramarachchi continues to promote Sri Lanka's history and cultural heritage while demonstrating how technology can preserve historical knowledge for future generations.
