Esala Poya Almsgiving (Dansala) Organized by the Youth of Walipillawa

On 22 July 2013, in celebration of Esala Poya, I had the opportunity to participate in an almsgiving (Dansala) organized by the youth of Walipillawa. This community service initiative was arranged with the support of local residents and volunteers to provide free meals to visitors on Poya day.
A variety of traditional Sri Lankan dishes, including rice and several curries, were carefully prepared and served throughout the day. The event reflected the strong spirit of volunteerism, with young people actively contributing to every stage of the programme—from food preparation and organization to serving meals with kindness and respect.
Community Dansalas such as this are an important expression of Sri Lanka's Buddhist traditions, promoting generosity, compassion, and unity among people. Being able to contribute to this meaningful religious and social service activity was both a privilege and a rewarding experience.
